Structure of training

Each trainee is expected to spend six months in four different departments, although we are flexible and sometimes arrange a split seat to enable a trainee to focus on a specialist interest such as Employment and Projects.

In each seat a trainee has a supervisor who will support, encourage and supervise the trainee during their seat.  They are also appointed a "buddy" to help to guide them through their training contract.  The buddies are usually either second year trainees or newly qualified solicitors.

A training contract is all about hands on training and there is plenty of good quality and interesting work for trainees to experience.  We have a tailored comprehensive trainee development programme to equip our trainees with the skills they need to develop a successful career.  This includes modules on financial and business awareness, making the most of a training contract, communication and people skills and marketing and networking.  Alongside this, we arrange courses to meet Law Society requirements (such as the Professional Skills Course).

We encourage trainees to get a mixture of experience across our offices.  For trainees who join our Exeter office we encourage that, where possible individuals spend a period of their training contract in our London office.  For trainess who join our London office, we offer a similar opportunity for individuals to spend some time in Exeter.  There are also opportunities for secondments overseas.  The work and its balance will vary from seat to seat, but during your training you will run your own files, work in teams on bigger transactions and experience client contact on the phone and in meetings.
